18. News App Critique

Apple News App

Many people opt to download one or more news apps on their cell phone in order to keep up with news and receive it instantly. I looked up the top news app and among the top are: Apple News, Google News, Microsoft News, The New York Times, BBC News, CNN News, Buzzfeed News, SmartNews, and Reddit. I was actually surprised to see Apple News at the top of the list. Not that I have had bad experience or that I didn't think it was good; it just seems as though people do not always use the apps that the iPhone automatically provides for you. To be honest, I have never even used Apple News for this assignment, so this critique will be a surprise for readers and me, the writer, alike.

Upon first look when getting on the app, it's clean and neat like most Apple platforms. It seems easy enough to use with 3 tabs serving as the navigation at the bottom of the screen. The first tab (the screen that viewers are on upon opening the app) is the "today" tab. It feature news stories relevant to today and as you scroll down on that page, there's even a section that says "More for you" as if it knows what you would like to read. Is this based on my internet searches? Who knows. Towards the bottom of this screen is a section headed "Trending Stories." This is where you can see what is currently trending from different news stations. Currently, at the top of mine, are stories from People, Buzzfeed, Huffpost, and Fox News. Also on the Today tab, are sections as you scroll down labeled Health, Politics, Sports, Entertainment, Fashion, Science, Business, and
Food.

The middle tab on the bottom is the "News+" tab. It seems to also have a variety of sections to search through in this section as well. At the top, it is featuring a call to action section to subscribe to the AppleNews+ Magazine. It even gives an option to try one month free. Scrolling down, it features a Cover Story section and yet another "For You" section. Scrolling down even further, readers will see even more feature stories.

The third tab is the Following tab. I can personalize certain topics such as entertainment, politics, fashion, food, sports, health, etc. on this page.
