1. What is News?
Defining News
News is something we all pay attention to everyday of our lives whether consciously or subconsciously. Whether it be celebrity, politics, weather, or sports, somehow all of us are invested in one way or another in news. But what is it? What categorizes something as news? And what makes something news-worthy? If I had describe it in my own words I would describe news as information that has just been introduced to you that you did not know prior. It is usually something relating to a big event or something going on in the world.
It does seem as though that we typically read about news that is unsettling or sad. We seem to seldom get happy or exciting news. It is always refreshing to read and learn of something happy going on in the world. I read a quote by Fred Rogers one day that has stuck with me ever since. He said, "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'" That made an impact on me and definitely made me look at the news differently ever since. What I like about this quote is that it made news not quite so scary to me anymore, as I tend to stay away from watching the news especially during a tragedy. There is always something good to look for even in the midst of a tragedy.
News is found in almost anywhere you look, and you can get it from a multitude of different sources whether that be from a news website like foxnews.com, or cnn.com or even from Snapchat news stories like Cosmopolitan or Buzzfeed, all of these are considered news sources! Anything that feeds you something new in the media that you didn't know previously, is considered news.
News is something that is all around us, and whether like it or not, we cannot escape it and frankly, most people are obsessed with it. Everyone wants to know the latest scoop on everything.
